Indeed with it's development stretching across a number of bays and including five distinct beach areas it is possibly the biggest in physical area. There are plenty of restaurants and bars and some shopping.
The best views of Paleokastritsa can be taken from the various restaurants and viewing points in Lakones the hill village directly above. From the beach below the monastery regular boat excursions depart for the caves and smaller bays.
Things to do and where to eat and drink in Paleokastritsa
The 13th century Byzantine castle of Angelokastro (castle of angels) is a 8km drive north of Paleokastritsa. From the parking area there is a steep path up to the domed gate in its outer defensive walls. Great views from the sea facing battlements with a curious small chapel (dedicated to the angel Gabriel) in its centre. On the lower level is a small church carved into the rock.
Palekastritsa Monastery. As you drive into Paleokastritsa you reach the main beach and large car park and the road continues up the hill (single track so controlled by tidal flow traffic lights) up to the monastery. The monastery complex includes a pretty internal courtyard with a bell tower a small museum housing icons from the 17th and 18th centuries and an attractive chapel with a small monastery vegetable garden outside. Climb beyond the monastery (towards the large cross) for great coastal views.
