Kanoni & Vlacherna Monastery
Kanoni is an upmarket area of Corfu Town and the location of the most iconic image of Corfu that of the whitewashed Vlacherna monastery and beyond Pontikonisi ("mouse island").
The Vlacherna monastery is 17th century (venetian period) and was a nunnery but is now open for visitors to explore its tiny courtyard and chapel. It featured in the James Bond movie "golden Eye" in 1981 with Roger Moore picking up Carole Bouquet from the jetty in front of the monastery.
Being adjacent to / overlooking Corfu airports runway a popular pastime is watching planes arriving and departing.
There are regular buses from the centre of Corfu town to Kanoni dropping at the plaza in front of the Corfu Holiday Palace Hotel and the Kanoni Cafe. You can enjoy the elevated views from there and if you wish then take the steps down to the shore and the jetty out to the monastery from where you can also take one of the short boat trips out to Pontikonisi (Mouse Island).
