Old Port Area
Corfu Town's Old Port /Harbour was the original arrival point into Corfu Town until the construction of the far larger New Port a few kilometres north. It now looks like a bit neglected with Corfu Town's largest (although still small) car parking area adjoining a large Square ; hopefully it is planned for development because its location is remarkable. There are plenty of Cafés and restaurants in the area.
Nestled below both of Corfu Town's forts, adjoining the warren of streets in the Old Town and with notable historical sites and Corfu Town's Synagogue all within a short walk.
At the other end of the port area the 16th centuryMetropolitan Church of Panagia Spiliotissa with its wonderfully rich baroque decoration is up a flight of steps above the piazza near the Salto restaurant.
Whilst in the area (below the New Fort ) take some time to view the poignant Holocaust Memorial ;on the 14th June 1944, 1,800 Jews were transported to Auschwitz, where 1,600 were immediately sent to the gas chambers.
A short coastal walk along the Arseniou takes you back to the Asiatic museum and the Liston/Spinada; stop off at the 15th century Antivouniotissa Church with its notable Byzantine Museum.
